Bleeding Purple: Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang and President Sue Decker

Jerry Yang and Sue Decker Jerry Yang is one of the best-known of the Web’s early Internet entrepreneurs. Since he created Yahoo with David Filo in 1994, it has become one of the most highly trafficked sites on the Web. But the company has also fallen on tougher times of late, with challenges from more powerful companies. While Yang has struggled to make changes at Yahoo quickly, his tenure was threatened in February with an unsolicited takeover bid by Microsoft. Sue Decker has also been in the hot seat over the last year, as the No. 2 exec at Yahoo, playing a critical role in its business strategy and vision, as the company has sought to reinvigorate itself.

One of the giants of the PC industry, Michael Dell founded his namesake company in 1984 with $1,000 and the brilliant idea of selling a complicated product directly to customers, both businesses and consumers. Dell eventually became the world’s largest seller of personal computers. But, after stepping down as CEO a few years ago, Mr. Dell was forced to resume the role in 2007 after changing market conditions caused the company to falter. Asked in 1997 what he would do if he were CEO of Apple, Dell replied, “What would I do? I’d shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders.” Today, Apple CEO Steve Jobs might say the same thing of Dell …

A TV Thinner Than a Credit Card: Sir Howard Stringer, Chairman and CEO, Sony

Howard Stringer Sir Howard Stringer has been chairman and chief executive officer of Sony Corporation since June 2005. He is the first non-Japanese leader of this global manufacturer of audio, video, game, communications and information-technology products for the consumer and professional markets. Now, as Sony works to take back its leadership position in the electronics industry, Stringer pushing the company to be more innovative, more agile. “I’m asking you to get mad,” Stringer said in a recent speech to employees, demanding that they be more “energetic,” “bold” and “imaginative” in running Sony’s businesses.

Guitar Hero IV: Bobby Kotick, Chairman and CEO of Activision

Since 1991, Bobby Kotick has been running Activision (ATVI), in which he bought a controlling interest when it was an insolvent video-game company in 1990. The witty Mr. Kotick has since built the company into one of the industry’s largest, with net revenues of approximately $2.7 billion. More importantly, Activision turbocharged itself when it merged this past year with Vivendi Games, which includes Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft, one the most popular multi-player games.
